Ever wonder what makes our water features feel so natural?

How We Do It Differently

Let us tell you a quick story about our client Ron. We had just installed a waterfall in his front yard when he invited us back to discuss another project. Over coffee, Ron chuckled and said, “Mike, you won’t believe this. We had guests last weekend, and they were convinced the waterfall was a natural part of the property when we bought the house!”

What makes something truly unforgettable? It’s the meticulous attention to the little things. We obsess over these details so that every aspect of your water feature feels intentional and harmonious. It’s 100 tiny details that make the difference, not one silver bullet.

Learning from Nature

We spend a lot of time outdoors. Not just for fun, but to study how natural water moves, how it interacts with rocks, plants, and the land. We bring all these observations back to your backyard.

Expertise in Proper Rock Placement

Rock placement is an art form that we’ve mastered. We know how to size, layer, and set boulders to mimic natural geological formations.

Avoiding the Common Mistakes

Here’s what we watch out for to keep things natural:

WRONG SIZE ROCKS!
We handpick boulders specific to each project to ensure they match the slope perfectly, creating a natural rather than constructed appearance.

VISIBLE BOTTOMS OF BOULDERS!
We bury the bases of our boulders to make them appear as though they have been part of the landscape forever. Visible bases can detract from the natural effect.

INCORRECTLY FRAMED WATERFALLS
A basic waterfall setup includes two frame rocks on the sides and a weir stone in the middle where water flows over. For a natural look, the weir stone should be set back behind the frame rocks, suggesting that water erosion shaped the rocks over time. The placement and angle of the frame rocks are crucial for achieving a realistic waterfall appearance.

NOT EXCAVATING ENOUGH FOR WATERFALLS
Proper excavation is critical for waterfall construction. We create large, flat areas before placing any framing boulders to ensure stability and a natural “sunken in” look, making the boulders seem like they’ve always been part of the landscape.

Near a patio or seating area where you can enjoy the sight and sound of flowing water. Also, consider views from inside the home and, when possible, take advantage of natural slopes for a more organic look.

Typically every two weeks, depending on weather and evaporation. Larger basins hold more water, so they require less frequent top-offs than smaller ones.
